Description:

Record a Story: The Day You Were Born is a recordable storybook that enables a parent, grandparent, or other special family member or friend to read a story to a child, even if they are miles or times zones apart. The voice recording is permanent; it will not be lost when the book's batteries are changed. The product makes an ideal gift for a child age 18 months and older from out-of-town relatives, a parent who is away from home frequently, or someone in the military assigned to a faraway land.

The person recording the book tells a story of realizing the deepest meaning of love on the day a child was born. One passage reads, "The day you were born I finally knew a love I'd never felt. So total. So true." Record a Story: The Day You Were Born is easy to set up. Follow these directions:

  • Turn to the page you wish to record.
  • Press the RECORD button. Listen to the instructions. When you hear a beeping sound, read the words on the page.
  • After you are finished reading the page, press STOP. You can re-record until you are satisfied with your recording. Repeat the process with the remaining pages of the book. You can also record a personalized message on the dedication page.
  • Set the locking switch behind the screw-on plate to ensure that your recording won't be inadvertently erased.

Three replaceable AAA batteries that power the sound module come with the book.

Features:

Record your voice on each page, reading the story to create a keepsake gift for a child.

7 recordable two-page spreads.

Easy press-and-record directions.

Lock button prevents erasures.

Sturdy board pages stand up to heavy use.

1Poorly Written, NOT Fun to ReadNov 29, 2011
By D. Morris
I recently placed an order for a number of recordable storybooks (I have five young grandsons), and I loved all of them except "The Day You Were Born". My grandsons love storybooks, so I've read dozens of books to them over the years. I *wanted* to like this one, but it's lame enough, and the rhyming cadence is "off" enough, that I'm actually packaging it up to return it.

It's indicative that the author is NOT credited on the cover, nor on the title page. On the copyright page in fine print it says the author is Deirdre Quinn Burgess. Google that name and you'll find not an author, but an associate editor for calendars and gift books. That explains much. This is a "throw together a recordable book" offering. I suspect the title is a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on children's author Nancy Tillman's wonderful "On the Night You Were Born" book. Or perhaps Debra Frasier's modern classic, "On the Day You Were Born".

The artwork is nice, but it almost seems to have been generated for an entirely different kind of storybook. It depicts a stream running through the woods past a number of different animals and, toward the end, a beehive. I almost wonder if the publisher already had the artwork in hand and tried to come up with words to match it.

Here are the words to "The Day You Were Born":

Before you were born, I thought I knew love.
I knew it in the song of a bird flying above.
I knew love in the kiss of a breeze on my face.
A whispering touch as I went place to place.
I knew love in the lapping of a wave on my feet.
A cold little tickle, a comfort so sweet.
I knew love in the warmth of the sun on my skin.
I closed up my eyes and took the warmth in.
I knew love in a rainbow curving across the sky.
It stretched above me so magical, so high.
I knew love in the buzz of a bee.
Sometimes I thought, "He's buzzing for me."
I knew love in each little way.
But it was nothing compared to that wonderful day.
The day you were born
I finally knew
A love I'd never felt.
So total. So true.
When I held you,
I could finally see
The love I'd been missing
Was between you and me.

1I knew love in the buzz of a bee???Dec 02, 2011

This book has an odd poem- without consistent meter and involving some strange concepts- like feeling love in the buzz of a bee that's buzzing maybe for YOU. Ok, if a bee is buzzing for me I'm outta there. Just sayin.

Once you figure out the book is too thick to lay flat and get repeatable results you have a chance at programming the whole book. Instead of laying flat sit under a light and hold the left hand section of the book straight up. This allows the light to correctly filter through the holes to line up your words with the correct page. Still plays back unreliably if book is laid flat open.

5Works perfect!Jul 27, 2011

We bought these books for our children. With daddy deploying we hoped this would help make a smoother transition. The books were easy to record, and work fine when turning the pages. It is true you can not turn the pages lightly but my children wouldn't know how to turn a page lightly if you payed them. The story is short as stated but I still think they are worth every penny!

Record a Story the Day You Were Born

You get what you pay for. We spent an hour trying to record the story. Every time we checked when we thought we were done the page sequencing did not line up. This was a birthday present for our grandaughters 1st birthday. we were extremely dissatisfied.
